Summit Band Directors

Mary Dunn-Hayward

Mary Dunn-Hayward is one of the sixth grade band directors at Summit Middle School. This is my fourth year at Summit. Before teaching in Johnston Mary taught at Southeast Polk and Holy Trinity Catholic in Des Moines. She is a Carroll, Iowa native, graduating from Carroll Kuemper and then University of Northern Iowa.

Mary lives in Urbandale with my husband, Jim and my bichon, Minnie. She has two grown children, Grant and Anne, and a grandson, Ben. Mary is an organist at St. Mary of Nazareth Parish in Des Moines. Mary loves to read, walk, bike and eat chocolate!

Mary says, "Summit is a rewarding place to teach. Our band program is terrific. Students are great. Life is good!"

Wendy Green

Wendy Green is currently in her fourth year of teaching instrumental music at Summit Middle School, where her responsibilities include sixth grade bands and lessons for sixth and seventh graders. Prior to teaching in Johnston, Mrs. Green taught in the Marshalltown and West Marshall community school districts. She received he Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Northern Iowa.

Mrs. Green enjoys spending time with her husband, two sons and their puppy. She also likes walking, enjoying the outdoors, reading, performing music, visiting family and friends, and watching movies.

Peggy Wolfe

Peggy Wolfe joined the instrumental music staff in the Johnston Community School District in 1990 and is completing her twenty-eighth year of teaching in the public schools. Previous to teaching for Johnston she taught at Waukee and the Woodward-Granger School Districts. She graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Drake University in 1978. She feels very fortunate to have witnessed the tremendous growth in the Johnston Schools and the Johnston Band programs and to have been a part of the Johnston “Band Family” both as a teacher and a parent.

Mrs. Wolfe is married to fellow band director Richard Wolfe who is teaching at the Johnston High School. Her family includes daughter Laura and son-in-law Matt Garrett who reside in Cedar Rapids. Daughters Kate Albrecht, Caryn Albrecht and Kelly Albrecht are Johnston graduates and former band members.

In her free time Mrs. Wolfe enjoys gardening, spending time outdoors, reading, listening to music, yoga and playing with her youngest child, a one-year-old miniature longhaired dachshund named “Daisy”.
